The DJI Phantom 3 4K carries much more predominant features for professional photographers who love to get creative behind the camera. Built for aerial film making and photography, DJI Phantom 3 4K has all the features of Phantom 3 but also carries excellent vision positioning and advanced 4K video recording as well.

Released this year (2016), it is the cheapest Phantom models available that has the ability to shoot at 4K resolution.

The Aircraft

Phantom 3 4K arrives in a pure white body with shining gold accessories. The package includes everything you need to kick start your photographic passion. The Phantom features 1280g i.e. 2lbs approximately making it quite compact and light weight to carry around.

Phantom 3 Standard - 2.7K HD Camera - Live View as You Fly

The aerodynamic propellers can self-tighten itself thus boosting the thirst while staying calmly in place no matter how you fly the drone.

It has a built-in GPS that calculates the altitude level before you take off. The default altitude limit is around 6000m during take off. You can change it at your discretion. It also features air braking mechanism that stops the vehicle at place to prevent any collision.

You will have a Beginner Mode that will teach you on how to learn flying in safe and limited area. You can also check virtual lessons that is available at DJI Phantom 3 4K. This helps not only to safeguard your Phantom but also your investment. Features such as Worry-Free pilot, Navigational system etc. helps in making the ride much more swift and secure. While we are on it, make sure you are NOT FLYING on Government Restricted Area or places where hovering a private vehicle are prohibited.

Camera

While not so long ago 1080 x720p defined HD, DJI brings you 4K resolution (4096 x 2160) that is 4 times bigger resolution than standard high definition. Now that’s real Ultra HD at your hand that gives you real time impeccable clarity. DJI Phantom 3 4K gives you the option to toggle between photo modes or video modes. For instance, choose between UHD, FHD or HD resolution that suits you the best. The latest firmware updation carries excellent video downlink connection speed that means live feed right from the air without any interruption. Connect the in-built Wi-Fi using the remote controller, launch the DJI Go app and enter the Cam view. Once you have established the connection you are good to go. Subsequently, you can upload your live feed right on to YouTube and share your experiences with friends and family throughout the world.

The 3-axis gimbal is intuitive and ensures that you capture all the elements while it stabilizes the camera. In fact, it makes a point to limit the Pitch, Roll Yaw movements steadying the camera at every turn so that you get perfect photographs every time. It is recommended to stay at -+15 degree during yaw so as to prevent the propellers from intruding in the footage. It helps in getting high resolution images without any blur or shakiness.

DJI uses Sony EXMOR 1/2 3” CMOS sensor that effectively captures 12.4 megapixels in compressed JPEG or RAW format. The sensor is 6.16mm wide and 4.62mm high. The recording time is approximately 25 minutes per charge.

Quad Controller

Connect your smartphone to the quadcopter controller, plug in the battery and you are ready to start exploring. The Wi-Fi ensures that you stay connected to your drone with a high transmission frequency of 5.8GHz even when it is 0.75mile away from you.

The Remote controller features green LED lights that blink once you successfully connect to the drone. There is a slight updation in the Phantom 3 4K compared to Phantom 3 professional or advanced. While the major features remain the same, the crucial factor is the Wi-Fi video down link of 480p at 30 fps video that is now updated in the latest firmware. In fact, this quadcopter has an effective signal range of 0.74 miles i.e. 1200m in spacious areas. This takes off the worry of buffering and stays you connected with the roundabouts directed from air.

Unlike Phantom 3 Standard, 4K comes with amazing Vision Positioning System. Basically, it uses a camera and couple of ultrasonic sensors that scan the ground and holds it position still. VPS is another point that needs attention when you are flying close to the ground or any possible obstacles. For instance, if you are flying in a concealed area such as living room, chances of hitting any objects or people are more. Though the drone comes with in-built GPS, you may not get accurate results indoors. At times, GPS can be inaccessible. This is when VPS comes to your rescue. The drone adjusts if it detects any obstruction and stops moving thus holding its position on air.

It is always challenging when you are flying near the ground level since chances of bumping around trees, people, dogs or walls are there. Also, bear that the ultrasonic sensors might have difficulty measuring distances when you are flying the drone over sound-absorbing materials. This include

  • Monochrome surfaces (pure black/red/green/white etc.)
  • Moving objects such as vehicles
  • Extremely dark places
  • Places that has thick carpet
  • Flying on high speed i.e. over 8m/s at 2 meters or 4m/s at a meter
  • Tiles that have the same design or any other similar textures
  • Flying over water

The Phantom 3 4K drone from DJI includes Automatic Flight Logs has a memory to remember each and every flight that you take. It keeps a mental note such as flight time, route, distance etc. for future reference.

Battery

Your DJI Phantom 3 4K comes with Intelligent LiPo 4S Flight battery. A good base battery that enhances the performance of your drone, LiPo 4S batteries are of great value for your money. It weighs around 365g with a default voltage of 15.2V with a capacity of 4480 mAh. Make sure that it is fully charged when you are using it for the first time. The output power supply is 100W. The intelligent battery balances the voltage every time you charge and stops charging once the battery are full. Do NOT operate your vehicle when the battery is low as landing back the drone (or safely getting it back on ground) can be critical at such times.

Speed

A quadcopter like other models, DJI Phantom 3 4K features brushless motors and speedy ESCs that double the performance of your copter. Efficient motors support in stable speed, adjust the altitude level and hit the brake at your call. The maximum ascent speed is 5m/s and descent speed is 3 m/s. The top speed is 16.0 m/s i.e. 36 mph which is basically a slight faster speed than the average drone available. Note that this is the horizontal top speed. There are other factors such as wind, strength and direction of flight that can affect the travel.

DJI Phantom 3 4K can fly easily upto 120 meters (394 ft) above the sea level. Bear in mind that this isn’t the actual height based on ground level on which you fly. It all comes down to the operating range i.e. 1200 meters. Your drone can easily fly in ambient temperatures ranging from 0oC to 40oC. Make it a point to check the climatic condition before starting off the flight.

Software & DJI Go App

Go App supports both iOS and Android devices. You can download the app based on your smartphone operating system.

With the ergonomic Phantom series models, you are not only inspired but motivated to perform better as well. There are several parameters that are visible at your Go mobile application. Get live high definition videos, images and be a movie maker. A complete user-friendly application, everything is clear cut and logical in the app. It displays battery percentage, editing tool, ISO adjustment, GPS, flight mode and many more.

Zoom in on the Google map and you can actually command the drone to hover around the circled area of the map. With a single tap on your mobile device, make your drone “return-to-home” safely. There is also an autonomous option to make the drone take off and land automatically.

User Reviews

DJI Phantom 3 4K has received 4.5 out of 5 star ratings from users. Passionate pilots are loving the drone and have claimed it one of the best if you want a drone that is both affordable and creative. It is available in amazon at an affordable rate and company delivers best warranty. The clarity is unbelievably fantastic and so is the drone that is just easy to fly.

On the downside, few uses claim that the customer support needs attitude adjustment. One user claimed that the customer support was quite rude and they never really resolved the issue owner was dealing with.

DJI Phantom 3 4K consumer reviews

Excellent – Harris

“This is the first nice drone that I have purchased. I have literally flown many RC planes over the years and wanted to give it a try. I am not a wizard when it comes to drones but then this is easy to film and fly.”

Awesome product – Adam

“It is so easy to fly. Super fun. I just wish that the battery lasted longer. But buying another one wasn’t that much expensive.”

Conclusion

To sum it up, DJI Phantom 3 4K is a slightly higher version of Standard. It does come with slight downsides such as battery time on air, minimal operating range etc. For a 4K you would expect a slightly better time than Standard (both 25 minutes) which is something DJI needs to work on. One user claimed the battery takes an hour to get charged but then so does your smartphone. This is one of those cons that can be easily ignored when you have a fantastic 4K quadcopter in hand.
